Mission

To provide leadership, encourage wise resource decisions, set standards, encourage stewardship and education cooperators, agencies, land users, and youth to conserve, improve and sustain our natural resources and the environment.

A conservation district is a political subdivision of the state of Colorado governed by a board of supervisors elected at large from within the boundaries.  The boundaries were originally formed by landowners petitioning in to the district. They do not always follow county or watershed boundary lines. Each district holds regular, open meetings to direct the district’s business.  A conservation supervisor is responsible for local conservation programs, just as elected county officials are responsible for county services or school district boards are responsible for education.

Western Slope Region

To the south east, where the region abuts the tail of the Central Mountains region, several alpine areas near the end of the Southern Rockies, including the notable ski communities of Silverton and Telluride. Moving west, much of the region consists of sub-alpine and mid-elevation forests, as the topography gradually descends from the high peaks of the Rockies to the mesas, plateaus, and canyons of which much of the Western Slope is comprised.
