Ernest House Sr. grew up in Mancos Canyon near his grandfather, Chief Jack House, the last hereditary chief of the Ute Mountain Ute tribe. Before his death in 1971, Chief House moved in with Ernest and his wife.

May 20, 2011--State agency OKs grant-loan for local water authorities (Durango Herald)

The Colorado Water Conservation Board has approved a grant-loan package that allows two La Plata County water agencies to move ahead with their plans. The Lake Durango Water Authority will get water it needs to meet demands of customers in the mountains along U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango.

In a unanimous vote, the state House approved buying more water in the Animas-La Plata Project. House Bill 1274 spends $14 million for water projects across the state, including $12 million so the state can buy water from the federal government in the reservoir southwest of Durango. The state has the right to buy 10,460 acre-feet of water in Lake Nighthorse.

La Plata West Water Authority Completes Intake Structure

Behind the scenes of the ALP, the La Plata West Water Authority (LPWWA) was working to complete an intake structure that would be the first phase of the ‘backbone’ of their project to provide a domestic water system in southwestern La Plata County. The intake structure had to be complete before Lake Nighthorse fills.
