August 12, 2009--Flood impact: City, FEMA disagree (Pueblo Chieftain)

Pueblo is completing its own hydrology report on Wild Horse Dry Creek that shows significantly lower floods during a 100-year flood than earlier federal estimates. The Federal Emergency Management Administration is redrawing floodplain maps for Pueblo based on the adequacy of levees built following major floods on the Arkansas River in 1921 and along Fountain Creek in 1965. Preliminary mapping, discussed by FEMA with City Council in April, showed levees on Wild Horse Dry Creek in danger of overtopping and inundating the Downtown area with a 100-year flood.
